Description: The Magyar Nemzeti Bank is issuing HUF 15,000 silver and HUF 2,000 non-ferrous commemorative coins named "Hugonnai Vilma" on the occasion of the 175th anniversary of the birth of the first Hungarian female doctor. The commemorative coins were designed by sculptor Virág Szabó. Vilma Hugonnai was born on September 30, 1847 into a count family. She was self-taught from a young age, learned nursing and the basics of medicine, and later, with the permission of her husband and father, but without financial support, she moved to Switzerland, where women were already allowed to study at university. In order to finance his studies, he offered his family jewels for sale. Thanks to his dedication, he graduated in 1879 and was ordained as a doctor in Switzerland. The accreditation of his diploma encountered extraordinary obstacles, in 1881 he passed the matriculation exam, which is absolutely necessary for domestic university studies, and then applied for the recognition of his medical degree, but the education regulations of the time did not allow this. Vilma Hugonnai emphasized health education, so she also gave lectures to the poorer classes. She fought for women's equality, wrote a study on the balance of work and family life, and the importance of girls' education. In 1895, the law made it possible for women to visit the faculties of medicine, humanities and pharmacy, and even to naturalize diplomas obtained abroad. In 1897, Hugonnai studied in Hungary as well, and in the presence of Ferenc József, she was the first Hungarian woman to receive her medical degree. During the First World War, he completed the military surgery course at the age of 65, and although he did not serve on the front line, he organized patient observation centers in fourteen rural towns. In 1915, he received a medal for his work in wartime health care. Vilma Hugonnai died in 1922. Not only did he set an example as a doctor, but thanks to his fight for women's rights, women were given more and more opportunities: they could take up a job, continue their education or even get a degree. The MNB pays tribute to the work of Vilma Hugonnai by issuing silver commemorative coins with a nominal value of HUF 15,000 and non-ferrous metal coins with a nominal value of HUF 2,000 on the occasion of the 175th anniversary of the birth of the first Hungarian female doctor. The coin image of the commemorative coins is the same, only the denomination differs. Source: MNB
