| Description: | Budapest, July 31, 2018 – In honor of György Hevesy, the Magyar Nemzeti Bank will issue commemorative coins with a nominal value of HUF 5,000 and non-ferrous metals with a nominal value of HUF 2,000 on August 1, 2018, the birthday of the scientist and inventor. The special oval-shaped commemorative coins are presented as the 5th member of the series presenting the Hungarian Nobel laureates, launched in 2012. The emission is appropriate because 75 years ago he was awarded the Nobel Prize in Chemistry "for the use of isotopes as indicators". The commemorative coins issued in honor of György Hevesy are legal tender in our country, but do not serve circulation purposes. Their primary role is to focus public attention on Hungarian success in scientific life, and to recognize the importance of discovery. György Hevesy is the Nobel Prize-winning discoverer of radioactive tracers, who brought this method to victory by revealing the main areas of application, above all, that the method can be used to examine living organisms. With his discovery, he founded a new discipline: nuclear medicine. The commemorative coins honoring the work of György Hevesy were designed by industrial goldsmith Zoltán Endrődy. Both commemorative coins are displayed with the same coin image, they differ only in their denomination. |
