He played a serious political role for the first time in the 1839-1840 Bratislava parliament as the leader of the opposition. In 1847 he was elected president of the Opposition Party, and in 1848 he was elected prime minister of the first independent, responsible Hungarian government. His first measure was the emancipation of serfs. However, Haynau's reign of terror did not spare him either, and he was executed on October 6, 1849. |
