Description: The Magyar Nemzeti Bank will issue special non-ferrous commemorative coins with the name "Richter Gedeon" on September 23, 2022, on the occasion of the 150th anniversary of the birth of the founder of the modern Hungarian pharmaceutical industry. The commemorative coins with a face value of HUF 2,000 are produced in mirror-gloss and silk-gloss versions, designed by industrial artist Gábor Kereszthury. Gedeon Richter started working as a pharmacist trainee in 1890, and in 1895 he obtained a pharmacist diploma at the University of Budapest (today's ELTE). After his higher education, he gained domestic and international experience in the field of pharmacy and pharmaceutical production. In 1901, he bought his first pharmacy in Budapest, where he produced organotherapy medicines. In 1907, he founded the pharmaceutical factory bearing his name in Kőbánya, which quickly became a leading international pharmaceutical supplier. One of the great successes of the factory was the antipyretic medicine patented in 1912. At the outbreak of the First World War, in 1914, the company already had 24 patents. The family company was transformed into a joint-stock company in 1923. Using its extensive international connections, during the Second World War the factory already had a representative network covering five continents, 70 countries and ten foreign subsidiaries. In recognition of his merits, Gedeon Richter was awarded the title of Chief Advisor to the Hungarian Royal Government. By the 1930s, Richter Rt. had developed into one of the most significant Hungarian foreign trade companies. The II. However, the Jewish laws of the years before World War II completely disabled Gedeon Richter. In 1942, he was stripped of his position as CEO, and was allowed to work as a consultant at his own company. In the fall of 1944, production activity was almost completely paralyzed. Although he could have fled abroad at that time, he remained in Budapest to protect the pharmaceutical factory, until he finally became a victim of violence against the Jews. Source: MNB
