Description: | Mária Terézia's silver SF thalers were minted in several countries and mints between 1780 and 1961. The coins are generally considered to be minted because most types were made after the death of Mária Theresia. There are many variations of the medal image depending on where and when it was issued. A detailed summary of the various variants can be found at https://www.theresia.name/en/svariants.html. Various sources claim that Mária Theresia's thaler has been minted since 1780 with an unchanged appearance. However, this is only typical of the versions after 1850. It is relatively easy to distinguish the earlier mints from those after 1850, and this gives the possibility of misunderstandings regarding the coin's originality and contemporaneity. Since it is a remint before 1858 (when the thaler was still an official currency), it cannot be considered an original piece. Most of the examples we come across are mints made after 1858. The page https://www.theresia.name/en/svergleich.html provides help in distinguishing the pieces made at the Vienna mint of the time and modern mints. |
