Willem-Alexander Coinage

Sándor Vilmos has been the ruler of the Netherlands since 2013, after his mother Beatrix abdicated. Vilmos Sándor is the first Dutch king in history who was not crowned, but only installed. Members of the Dutch royal family do not wear crowns, only a royal mantle. Vilmos Sándor has been minted since 2013, and his portrait can be seen on Dutch euro coins. The king's portrait was taken by the photographer Erwin Olaf, and the minting rights were granted to him by the Dutch Parliament. The right to mint money means that the king decides what portrait will be on the coins and what inscription will be on it. The right to mint money does not mean that the king owns the coins or can influence the monetary policy of the Eurozone. Among the coins made during the minting of King Vilmos Sándor, the most special ones are perhaps those that were minted for special occasions. Examples include the €50 gold coin issued for the King's 50th birthday in 2017, or the €5 silver coin issued for the fifth anniversary of the King's coronation in 2018. These coins not only depict the portrait of the king, but also other symbols that characterize the ruler or the Netherlands. The reverse of the €50 gold coin features a lion, the animal of the coat of arms of the Netherlands, while the reverse of the €5 silver coin features a drop of water, referring to the King's interest and expertise in water.
