Gallienus Coinage

The coinage of Emperor Gallienus (253-268) was the last large, unified coinage of the Roman Empire. During the emperor's reign, the empire was in the midst of a third-century crisis, and Gallienus had many opponents who proclaimed themselves emperors. Despite this, Gallienus managed to maintain the unity of the empire, and his coinage reflected this stability. The most commonly minted coins were denarius and sesquidenarius, which were silver-based money. He also minted gold solidus, bronze aces and sestertius. One of the characteristics of Gallienus' coinage was diversity. The emperor depicted many different deities and symbols on his coins to reinforce the unity of the empire. In addition, he often depicted military scenes to emphasize the power relations of the empire. The coinage of Gallienus is an important source for Roman numismatics and the history of the Roman Empire in the third century.
