Prince József Miksa of Bavaria was born in Munich in 1727, the fourth child of Elector Albert Károly of Bavaria and Archduchess Mária Amália of Austria. After his father's death, he inherited the government of the country. He concluded the Peace of Füssen with Mária Theresia, which ended the War of the Austrian Succession. In this agreement, she promised the empress that she would support her husband in the next imperial election. In 1757, he founded the Munich Academy of Sciences. In his country, he allowed Protestants to practice their religion freely. He married his cousin, Mária Anna Zsófia, but they had no children. With his death in 1777, the Bavarian male branch of the Wittelsbach family became extinct.
