Description: | The Magyar Nemzeti Bank is launching a new series of commemorative coins, which aims to draw attention to Hungarian Wolf Prize-winning mathematicians and their work. The first element of the series presents Péter Lax and his life work, who received one of the most prestigious international mathematical recognitions, the Wolf Prize in mathematics, 35 years ago. The silver commemorative coins with a nominal value of HUF 7,500 and non-ferrous metal commemorative coins with a nominal value of HUF 2,000 were designed by industrial artist Andrea Horváth. Péter Lax, an American mathematician of Hungarian origin, was born on May 1, 1926 in Budapest. The mathematics professor primarily dealt with applied mathematics, and his research areas include the theory of partial differential equations, fluid dynamics, and computational theory. In 1987, he was awarded the Wolf Prize in mathematics for his outstanding achievements in the field of analysis and applied mathematics. In 2005, he was awarded the Abel Prize, considered equivalent to the Nobel Prize, for his pioneering work in the field of the theory, application and computer solutions of partial differential equations. Péter Lax, who is currently living in America, graduated from New York University and worked there for most of his life. In his youth, he was helped by many mathematicians of Hungarian origin, including Gábor Szegő, Pál Erdős and János Neumann. This was the period when Neumann worked with all his mental strength on the development of the electronic computer and the development of efficient numerical methods. All of this may have had a decisive effect on Péter Lax, who himself became a researcher of equations describing wave-like movements. The primary role of the commemorative coins issued in honor of Péter Lax is to attract attention, they do not play a role in cash circulation. The images of the silver and non-ferrous commemorative coins are the same, they differ only in the denomination. Source: MNB |
