Austria - Deutsch-Wagram

Deutsch-Wagram is a small town with a rich history in Lower Austria, northeast of Vienna, in the western part of the Moravian Plain. The settlement was first mentioned in a tithe register in 1258. The prefix "Deutsch" was added around 1560 to distinguish it from the other Wagram, which was inhabited by Croats. In the Middle Ages, it was the property of several noble families, such as the Eckartsau and Puchaim families. The name of the town is intertwined with one of the largest battles of the Napoleonic Wars. 1809. The Battle of Wagram took place on July 5–6, 180000, where Napoleon's 180,000 soldiers defeated Archduke Charles's 120,000-strong Austrian army. The memory of the battle is preserved in the Heimatmuseum, which is housed in Archduke Charles's former military headquarters. In 1837, Austria's first railway line was built, running between Floridsdorf in Vienna and Deutsch-Wagram. This boosted the life of the city: it became a popular excursion destination for the Viennese bourgeoisie. The railway station building is still under monument protection today. The city was granted market town status in 1929, and was officially declared a city in 1984. After World War II, a Soviet military contingent was stationed here until 1955. The population is constantly growing, partly due to its proximity to Vienna.
