Description: Budapest, February 20, 2019 – The Magyar Nemzeti Bank is issuing commemorative coins with a face value of HUF 10,000 and non-ferrous metal with a face value of HUF 2,000 on the occasion of the 175th anniversary of the birth of Mihály Munkácsy at the Déri Museum in Debrecen. By issuing the coin, the central bank pays tribute to the internationally recognized figure of Hungarian painting from the 19th century, and with the choice of theme draws attention to our domestic public treasures, as the focus of the new commemorative coins is the painting Christ Before Pilate, which was returned to domestic ownership as part of the MNB Valuation Program. The commemorative coins were designed by Gábor Kereszthury. On the 175th anniversary of Munkácsy's birth, the MNB will issue a silver commemorative coin with a face value of HUF 10,000 and a non-ferrous metal version with a face value of HUF 2,000. The primary role of commemorative coins is to spread knowledge and commemorate, their use in everyday payment transactions should be avoided. The nominal value on them serves to preserve the collector's value of these coins. With the commemorative coins released today, the central bank pays tribute to the outstanding figure of 19th-century Hungarian painting, whose portraits accurately captured the characteristic characters of European and Hungarian society, rural and urban communities, with sociographic sensibility. His landscapes are at the forefront of European realist and plein-air painting. Since its foundation in 1950, the most prestigious Hungarian fine arts award has also been named after Munkácsy. The silver and non-ferrous versions are presented with the same coin image, they differ only in their denomination. The commemorative coins were designed by industrial artist Gábor Kereszthury.
