Description: In honor of Imre Kertész - on the occasion of the 20th anniversary of receiving the Nobel Prize for literature - the Magyar Nemzeti Bank is issuing commemorative coins with a face value of HUF 7,500 and non-ferrous metals with a face value of HUF 2,000 on the birthday of the numerous award-winning writer and translator. Imre Kertész (1929 -2016), a Hungarian writer and translator, was the first Hungarian to win the Nobel Prize for literature in 2002 "for his work as a writer, which advocates the vulnerable experience of the individual against the barbaric arbitrariness of history". The "Imre Kertész" commemorative coins have a special, oval shape and appear as the 7th member of the thematic series presenting Hungarian Nobel laureates. The commemorative coins were designed by industrial artist István Holló. Their ceremonial release will take place at the Imre Kertész Institute. Imre Kertész (1929–2016) was awarded the Nobel Prize for his literary work on October 10, 2002, as the first Hungarian writer. According to the Swedish Academy's statement, "The intransigence of Kertész's position is clearly recognizable in his style, which is like a well-grown hawthorn hedge: compact and spiky to the casual visitor. However, in doing so, it frees the reader from the burden of obligatory emotions and entices him to a special freedom of thought." He wrote his first novel, Sorstalansag, which reflects the natural history of the dictatorship, over thirteen years from 1960, but the book was only published in 1975 and remained almost unnoticed until the regime change. Since the 1990s, his works have been the focus of domestic and international attention. His biography is also of outstanding importance in the genre of novels, essays and diaries; his books are now available in dozens of languages. His work was rewarded with countless international awards, and he also received the most significant honors from his country, first the Kossuth Award and then the Order of St. István. The Magyar Nemzeti Bank is issuing a silver commemorative coin with a nominal value of HUF 7,500 and a non-ferrous metal version with a nominal value of HUF 2,000 with the name "Imre Kertész" on the occasion of the 20th anniversary of the awarding of the Nobel Prize in Literature. The special, oval-shaped commemorative coins are the 7th member of the series presenting Hungarian Nobel laureates, launched in 2012, commemorative coins honoring Albert Szent-Györgyi, Jenő Wigner, Róbert Bárány, Richard Zsigmondy, György Hevesy and György Békésy they follow in line. The primary role of the commemorative coins issued in honor of Imre Kertész is to draw attention, spread knowledge and salute, they do not play a role in cash circulation. The images of the silver and non-ferrous commemorative coins are the same, they differ only in the denomination. Source: MNB
