Description:

The 1-crown silver coin issued by Ferenc József I is one of the important numismatic pieces of the Austro-Hungarian Monarchy, which refers to the monarch's coronation in 1867 and at the same time to the relatively stable period of the Monarchy. The coin was issued in the middle of the changing political and economic environment, which reflected the dualistic form of government and the balance between the two countries (Austria and Hungary) in the monetary policy. By the second half of the 19th century, the Austro-Hungarian Monarchy had economic potential, which the consolidated characterized by industrialization and the growth of trade. The coin is made of silver, in most cases with a fineness of .835, which means that the coin contains 83.5% pure silver. The silver quality gave the coin not only an aesthetic value, but also a kind of trust, since it represented a great value in current money circulation. The 1 kroner coin played an important role in trade and everyday transactions. Despite the crisis periods of the Monarchy, this currency represented stability in the internal market. Coins greatly contributed to economic integration to facilitate the movement of goods and services between states. Among the outstanding pieces of numismatic collections from this period are many coins that promote youth symbolism, political messages or historical events, however, Francis I. József's coins also feature many groundbreaking reforms. The expansion of maritime trade and the reduction of customs duties, which helped the currency to prevail, also contributed to the economic recovery of the region.
