Description: On November 28, 2022, the Magyar Nemzeti Bank will issue a bronze patinated non-ferrous metal commemorative coin with a face value of HUF 2,000 named "Székesfehérvár, Romkert National Monument". The commemorative medal was launched in 2014 at the initiative of the National Heritage Institute, and is the ninth element of the series presenting domestic national monuments. The commemorative coin for the 1050th anniversary of the founding of Székesfehérvár was designed by sculptor Virág Szabó. Székesfehérvár is the political and cult center of medieval Hungary, the main scene of the coronation and burial of kings. The Romkert in Székesfehérvár is one of the most significant memorials to the founding of the Hungarian state. According to tradition, the city was founded in 972 by Grand Duke Géza. Our King St. István not only built a basilica in the settlement, but also made it a sacred and administrative center. The coronation insignia were kept in Fehérvár, and the royal treasury and archives were also located here. For almost five hundred years, it was the crowning city. It had a significant public law role in Hungarian history. Until the Turkish era, it was one of the most important cities in the country. The Romkert was built between 1936-1938. In 2011, it was inaugurated as a national memorial, and in 2020 it won the "Memorial of the Year" award. Source: MNB
