Mohammed V Coinage

The coinage of V. Mohammed from 1927 to 1961 was one of the most significant periods in Moroccan coinage history. The Moroccan mint minted many new types of coins that represented a new style and design. When the Sultan ascended the throne in 1927, the Moroccan mint still followed the traditions of the Ottoman Empire. The face of the Ottoman sultan was shown on the back of the coins, and the coat of arms of the Moroccan sultan on the obverse.V. However, Mohammed wanted to modernize the Moroccan state, and this also affected the mint. In 1928, he minted new coins bearing his own image and coat of arms. These coins were made in a more modern style and included new designs.In 1936 he introduced the 1000 dirham note, which was the first Moroccan note.V.
