II. King Constantine of Greece ruled Greece from 1964 to 1973. He was born on June 2, 1940, in Psychiko, near Athens, and died on January 10, 2023. His father was Prince Paul of Greece, the third son of King Constantine I and Princess Sofia of Prussia and German Empress. His mother is the daughter of Duchess Friderika Lujza of Hanover, Duke Ernő Ágost of Braunschweig and Princess Lujza of Prussia and Empress of Germany, II. He is the grandson of German Emperor William. He ascended the throne on March 6, 1964, after the death of his father, King Paul. During his reign, there were several political disturbances. In 1965, he fired his prime minister, Jórgosz Papandreu, because he was afraid that left-wing ideas would infiltrate the army. In 1967, a military coup preceded the planned parliamentary elections, and Constantine attempted a counter-coup, but it failed and he fled to Rome. The military regime took power, and on June 1, 1973, the monarchy was abolished and a republic was proclaimed. This step was also confirmed by a referendum. His wife is the Danish princess Anna-Mária. They had several children: Princess Alexandra of Greece and Denmark, Crown Prince Paul of Greece, Prince Miklós of Greece and Denmark, Princess Teodora of Greece and Denmark, and Prince Philip of Greece and Denmark. In 1960, in Rome, he won a gold medal in sailing in the Dragon Boat category. II. Constantine had a significant impact on the history of Greece during his life and reign, and is considered one of the defining figures in the country's modern history.
