Wilhelmina I Coinage

Queen Vilma I reigned in the Netherlands from 1890 to 1948. During his reign, the coinage system showed significant changes. In the 1890s, the old gold standard of 1875 was still in force. This meant that coins and banknotes were minted from gold and tied to the value of gold. In the 1920s, the world economy was in crisis, and the Netherlands was also involved. As a result of the crisis, the gold standard collapsed and the Dutch coinage system switched to fiat money. The fiat money is not tied to gold, but to the credit of the state. During the Second World War, the Netherlands was under German occupation. The German occupying authorities minted their own currency, the Reichsmark, in the Netherlands. After the war, the Netherlands returned to fiat money. Since then, the Dutch coinage system has not changed significantly.
