Numerianus Coinage

Emperor Numerian ruled the Roman Empire from 283 to 284. His father, Emperor Carus, became emperor in 282 and took his son with him on the Persian campaign. The campaign was successful and Numerian was named co-emperor in 283. Numerian's coinage followed traditional Roman styles. They minted gold, silver and bronze coins bearing the portrait of the emperor and the usual Roman inscriptions. The most frequently minted coins were: Aureus: a gold coin alloyed with silver bearing the portrait of the emperor and the following inscription: IMP. NUMERIANVS AVG.Denarius: silver coin bearing the emperor's portrait and the following inscription: IMP. NUMERIANVS AVG. PPAntoninianus: coin made of silver and copper, on which was the portrait of the emperor and the following inscription: IMP. NUMERIANVS AVG. PPNummus: bronze coin bearing the portrait of the emperor and the following inscription: IMP. NUMERIANVS AVG. Numerianus was minted in the eastern parts of the empire, primarily in Antioch. The coins are of good quality, and the portraits of the emperor are well executed. The emperor Numerianus was assassinated in 284 and succeeded by Carinus.
