Edward VIII's reign

Edward VIII 's life

VIII. Edward, full name Edward Albert Christian George Andrew Patrick David of Windsor, reigned in the United Kingdom from 20 January 1936 to 11 December 1936 and was Emperor of India. His reign was not long, lasting only 326 days. However, his life and reign were still memorable and scandalous. He was born as the eldest son of King Edward V. George and Mária Tecki on June 23, 1894 in the White Lodge castle in London. After his father's death in January 1936, he became the ruler of the United Kingdom and India. However, several controversial events took place during his short reign. Eduárd fell in love with the American Wallis Simpson, who had previously divorced twice. However, their marriage caused a scandal, as according to religious conventions she could not have a wife with a living former husband. Edward had to choose between the throne and his love, and finally abdicated to marry Wallis Simpson. Edward abdicated and was succeeded by his eldest brother, Albert, VI. He ruled under the name George. After his abdication, he received the Duke of Windsor title created for him. In June 1937, she married Simpson in France. Even before World War II, Eduárd sympathized with Nazi Germany and visited Adolf Hitler, so after the German occupation of France, he was appointed governor of the Bahamas in order to stay away from the country's leadership. He resigned after the World War and lived in France with his wife until his death. In the 60s, Eduárd had more and more problems with his health. In December 1967 in Houston, he underwent surgery for an aneurysm in his abdominal aorta, and two months later the retina in his left eye was detached. In 1971, the prince, who had smoked since his youth, was diagnosed with laryngeal cancer. He received radiation therapy, but nevertheless died at his home in Paris on May 28, 1972, a month before his 78th birthday. His body was returned to England and laid to rest in Frogmore, the Royal Burial Ground behind Queen Victoria's mausoleum. Until 1965, Eduárd and his wife planned to bury them next to each other in Baltimore, America, but then World War II. Elizabeth allowed them both to use the royal cemetery. Wallis followed her husband 14 years later.
