Mahendra Bir Bikram Shah Dev was the ninth king of Nepal from 1955 to 1972, until his death. During his reign, significant changes took place in the country. In 1960, after a coup, he introduced the non-party Panchayat system, which ruled Nepal for 28 years until a multi-party democracy was introduced in 1990. During Mahendra's reign, Nepal opened up to the world for the first time. The isolationist policy of the Rana dynasty, which ruled for 104 years, ended in 1951. King Mahendra was born on June 11, 1920, in the Narayanhiti Palace, as the first child of King Tribhuvan and Queen Kanti. Although he did not receive formal education, he studied politics, economics, Nepalese literature, history and culture privately. At a young age, he fell in love with a concubine named Geeta Gurung, with whom they had a son named Rabindra Shah. In 1940, he married Indra Rajya Lakshmi Rana's granddaughter, daughter of General Hari Shamsher Jang Bahadur Rana. They had three sons and three daughters. His first wife, Crown Princess Indra, died in 1950. In 1952, two years after the death of his queen, Mahendra married Indra's sister, Ratna Rajya Lakshmi Devi. There were no children from this marriage as King Mahendra married on the condition that his private life would not interfere with his national duties and the Queen agreed to be childless.1972. Mahendra Vlkram Shah was the ruler of Nepal from 1955 to 1972. He was the first Nepali ruler to introduce modern currencies in the country such as paisa and rupee. Mahendra Vlkram's coins were usually made of copper, brass or nickel and depicted the king's portrait, the coat of arms of Nepal or Hindu gods.
