Vienna mint history

A mill that has been operating since 1194 until today.

It mints coins and supplies raw materials to many countries around the world.

In 1194, Prince Lipót V acquired a larger amount of silver and decided to mint coins from it. This marked the beginning of the Vienna coinage. It got its current, final location in the 19th century in the center of Vienna, in the Heumarkt.

There were other mints all over Austria, but when the Republic of Austria was founded in 1919, the main mint in Vienna, the Münze Österreich, became the only one in the country.

After the Anschluss (between 1939-1945), German swastika coins were minted only here, in Vienna, with mint mark B.
